A Personal and Professional Dialogue

Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the Slavic Research Group at the University of Ottawa, I am pleased to announce that work has begun on a landmark publication of the complete correspondence between Sofia Tolstaya and her husband, L.N. Tolstoy, under the title “Sofia Tolstaya’s correspondence with Leo Tolstoy: a personal and professional dialogue”. These letters, including 201 (hitherto unpublished in any language) from Tolstaya to Tolstoy, as well as her postscripts (all as yet unpublished) to other people’s letters addressed to him, will be published in chronological order with annotations in four volumes – jointly by the Slavic Research Group at the University of Ottawa and the State L.N. Tolstoy Museum in Moscow. A comprehensive critical study in English of their personal and especially professional relationship, based on their correspondence, is planned as a fifth volume. In addition, I intend to publish (through the University of Ottawa Press) an annotated volume of selected letters by both correspondents in an English translation by John Woodsworth. A grant has been secured for this project from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. In conjunction with this research project, I am planning to organise, at some point in the next two years, an international conference on this topic here at the University of Ottawa. To gauge the extent of interest in this, I would like to hear now from any scholars who would consider either contributing a paper or simply attending. Please write to me at <adonskov@uottawa.ca>. The languages of the conference will be English, French and Russian. Andrew Donskov, F.R.S.C., Distinguished University Professor University of Ottawa
