IMAGE GALLERY

Information and Credits

All of the images in this photo gallery have been taken from one book, Lev Tolstoy in Photographs by Contemporaries, which was published in 1960 (Moscow: Publishing House of the USSR), before the Soviet government signed any international copyright agreements. In a Tolstoyan spirit, Tolstoy Studies Journal and The Tolstoy Society invite the public to freely use any or all of the images in this photo gallery. Not all of the images from this Soviet era book are in good condition, but all are interesting. Professor Caryl Emerson first called our attention to this book, and she sent us a complete set of slides taken by Ivan Zaknic from it. Tolstoy Studies Journal thanks Professors Emerson and Zaknic for their generous donation of these slides to the journal’s archives. The photos are arranged chronologically, and each one is accompanied by a brief description of its provenance and the date when it was taken. The descriptions of the photos were taken from Lev Tolstoy in Photographs by Contemporaries and edited by Julie Novak. If any viewer can add to a description, we urge him or her to write the web master. All information will need to come from a verifiable source.
